Chain waxing service

Having your chain waxed means you send it in and get it back fully degreased, ultrasonically cleaned and dipped in liquid hot wax. WaxCycle does this in Drempt with Silca Secret Chain Blend. You get your own chain back, sealed airtight and ready to fit, from €35.

How much does it cost to have a chain waxed?

At WaxCycle the Re-Wax service costs €35 for Standard, €45 for Speed and €55 for Endurance. Cleaning and measuring chain wear are included in that price. So per chain you pay €35 to €55 for a fully treated chain that's ready to fit.

Treatment Price Saving* Range dry* Range wet* Best for
Standard €35 ± 4 watts ~500 km ~300 km Racing and training, the all-round choice
Speed €45 up to ± 7 watts ~200 km ~100 km Races and time trials, short rides
Endurance €55 ± 1 watt ~1,000 km ~600 km Gravel, MTB, bikepacking and ultra

* Estimates based on public, independent tests, compared with an average wet oil. Not our own lab measurements. All three variants are Silca wax, each with its own blend.

Ride a lot? There are multi-treatment passes (Netherlands only): 3x Re-Wax with 15% off, 5x with 20% off and 10x with 25% off. With a multi-treatment pass, return shipping of your chain to you is free.

How it works: send in your chain, get it back treated

  1. Order. Choose your treatment in the shop and say whether you want a shipping pack.
  2. Send it in. Take the chain off the bike and send it to us. Arrange postage yourself, or choose the shipping pack (€4, Netherlands only): it arrives already addressed and postage paid. You can send the chain as it is, dirt and all.
  3. Inspection. We measure chain wear and assess its condition. If the chain is worn out, we'll get in touch and you decide what we do with it.
  4. Deep clean. Old wax, oil and dirt are removed completely in several ultrasonic rinse baths, right down between the rollers and pins. The chain then dries in the oven.
  5. Hot wax. The chain is immersed in molten Silca wax at a controlled temperature, in the variant you chose.
  6. Finishing. We work the chain in and remove excess wax.
  7. Return. Sent back sealed airtight as a letterbox parcel, so you don't need to be home. Ready to fit straight away.

How long does it take?

Allow a turnaround time of about a week. Tip: don't want to be off the bike in the meantime? Buy a second chain and swap them over. While one is with us, you ride on the other.

Which chains can we wax?

Any bicycle chain, from any brand and with any number of speeds. We advise against chains with a coloured (rainbow) coating. If your chain is joined with a connecting pin, order a quick link with it.

Why have your chain waxed instead of using oil?

Oil stays sticky and binds sand and dust; that mix acts like grinding paste between the pins, and that's where chain wear comes from. Wax is dry and hardly picks up any dirt. That makes the drivetrain run quieter, keeps your cassette and chainrings going longer, and in independent tests the chain lasts up to around three times as long. Wax it yourself or have it done?

Waxing it yourself is possible, but it takes quite a lot. You need an ultrasonic cleaner, a drying oven, a wax pot with a thermometer, wax and degreaser, plus a well-ventilated space. Every treatment takes a few hours: degreasing, cleaning, drying, waxing, cooling down and running it in. And it remains a messy job, with hot wax and degreaser in your shed or kitchen. If you leave it to us, you send your chain in and get it back ready to fit. Want to weigh it up yourself? Read Wax your chain yourself or have it done?
